Northeastern Women's Strong Start

This fall, the Lady Huskies started out strong winning over Smith in a stunning 8-1 victory. With their first victory of the program's history under their belt, there was a new enthusiasm in the team's determination to move up the college squash rankings. Their next opponent was the Weslyan Cardinals. The Huskies were ready for this test as well. Key wins came from #7 Jeneille Gooding, #6 Ali Heerema, #5 Francie Shafer, #4 Sarah Sweet, #3 Emily Raho, and #2 Tong Dhanasarnsilp to make this match the second win of the season with a score of 6-3. The next group of matches, however, proved to be more of a challenge as the level of their opponents rose. Even though the team's score was 1-8 against Amherst, there were a number of close matches. Emily Raho at #4 captured NU's only win. Francie Shafer, #6, and Sara Barrett,#2, both won games off their opponents with a four and five game match respectively. Tessa Martin,#1, pushed her opponent to a 10 point game on two occasions, but her opponent came away with a 3-0 victory.

The Huskies then had a marathon weekend of squash with four matches in three days. The team started off with Middlebury and had a close loss, 3-6. With the three victories, there were also three other four-game matches that could have gone either way. The next day continued with a loss against Cornell 0-9, and a short trip over to Harvard to play Bowdoin. The team started off well with a default for #9 Kat Kus and wins for # 8 Jeneille Gooding, #7 Ali Heerema, and #6 Francie Shafer. However, the top couldn't pull through, leaving the final score at 4-5. The last day of the weekend ended with a struggle against Tufts, 1-8. Tessa Martin, #1, had the Huskies' only win. Since matches from #2 Sara Barrett, #3 Tong Dhanasarnsilp, #4 Emily Raho, and #7 Ali Heerema all went four games, this suggests a much closer match than the score reveals.

With more match experience, and the addition of freshman Diana Toubman and sophomore Katie O'Neill, the team is looking forward to the Round Robin at Mount Holyoke to pick up a few more wins. Also, the Huskies are excited for the matches against Colby and Columbia to prepare them for the Team Nationals in February.
